Net zero emissions for maritime transportation: chimera or reality?

Wed 14 Feb | 15:30 - 16:00

Today, we address the significant role of maritime transportation in global emissions and the sector’s efforts to achieve net zero emissions. The maritime industry accounts for 2.5% of global emissions, a figure that is expected to rise. In response, the sector is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint and reach net zero emissions. Key strategies include adopting alternative fuels like LNG and implementing energy efficiency measures. Investment in research and development is also crucial, focusing on innovative solutions on propulsion systems. Furthermore, the industry is collaborating on new regulatory frameworks to lower emissions, such as the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index, mandating more efficient ship designs. Although reaching net zero emissions in maritime transportation is challenging, the ongoing commitment to new technologies and regulations makes it an attainable goal. The sector’s proactive approach signifies a pivotal shift towards more sustainable maritime practices.
